LanDforms
June 18th - 24th
LanDforms will be in creative residence for one week. During that time they will be developing their work, "The Life in Plastic". Here is a short description of the work and their residency from the co-creators.
"“The Life in Plastic” is a piece in development by LanDforms, the creative partnership of Leah Crosby and Danielle Doell, which examines female pleasure, consent, waste, transformation, and fantasy. Through the characterization of multiple Barbie-inspired identities, “The Life in Plastic” explores what it means to be a woman through the foil of this plastic American playtime icon.
LanDforms is conducting research at the Emmet County Transfer Station that will inform connections with other city transfer stations to develop an interactive performance in a raw environment. This performance space will frame a “perfect” pocket-sized plastic world constructed by the dancers, while exploring the intersections between the overuse of plastic and the exploitation of women." - LanDforms

LMnO3 is a collaboration between Deborah Lohse, Cori Marquis, and Donnell Oakely. This summer they will be in a creative residence for one week. Their creative focus during their residency will be on "unPacking Pina". Here is a short description of their work.
""unPacking Pina" is LMnO3’s love-letter to and re-contextualization of themes from the work of modern dance icon, Pina Bausch. Inspired by the complex femininity of Bausch’s work, LMnO3 revisits and unpacks second-wave feminism. Identifying traditional and current fragile feminine ideals and contemporary hallmarks of a successful dance career, LMnO3 sets out to discover if we are cut out for either task. Working to extricate ourselves from figurative and literal boxes, “success” is questionable, but we’ll make a hell of a mess trying." - LMnO3
Islands & Peninsulas

Islands & Peninsulas is a collective collaboration between the moving artists: Hannah Garner, Breckyn Drescher, Chelsea Hecht, and Benjamin Cheney. They will be creating a dance film on an island off of the peninsula the residency calls home.
Marcat

Marcat, a dance company founded by Mario Bermudez Gil and Catherine Coury, is returning to northern Michigan to be in creative residency. They had an informal showing and short residency at Crooked tree in March of 2017. For this residency Mario and Catherine will be creating with two other dancers, Francisco Martinez Garcia and Violeta Wulff. This residency is on the heels of a performance of "Inside Kid" at Jacob's Pillow in Beckett, MA as a part of the Inside/out performance series. Their time in residence will be to continue explore the work "Inside Kid" before a performances in the Detroit Metro area at the Detroit Film Theater. The performance is a part of the Detroit Dance City Festival.
"Inside Kid is a physical and dynamic dance evening that explores the fantasy and child-like spirit that lives in each of us. The original content will be created in a small Andalusian Village and have its world premiere at Jacob’s Pillow Inside Out Dance Festival as a 40-minute piece this July. While in residence at Crojk’s Croft, Marcat Dance will turn the 40-minute version into an hour length piece." - Mario and Catherine

Company SBB will be in creative residency for two weeks. The Company for this residency will consist of the Artistic Director, Stefanie Batten Bland, and four dancers, Yeman Brown, Jen Payan, Kayla Farrish, and our own Benjamin Cheney. Stefanie and the dancers will be exploring a new work, Embarqued. Here is a description of the work.
"Embarqued renders in three-dimensions the historical community plaques that pay homage to spaces and places. It introduces different points of entry to the discussion of migration and commemorative presence and is my interdisciplinary way to address how performance is transformative, connecting globally with local narratives. Defining communities through physical presence, Embarqued develops a conversation that affirms cultural identity through performance and expands upon the complex emotions it provokes. My goal is to elicit a kinesthetic response to what one sees, what one feels and what one does as a result." - SBB
Company SBB will be sharing an informal showing the work at Lavender Hill Farm on August 16th at 7pm. The showing will be donation based entry with all of the proceeds going to support the Tiny Room's series for Bliss Fest.
