While in residency, Ms. Mannino and her collaborators , Carol Chave and Jessica Winograd, will be developing a performance specific to Northern Michigan, exploring how both dance/movement and fiber art are connected. They will be holding workshops and will be putting on a public performance. Their final performance on June 14th, will include the public, who can choose to become part of the performance, helping to create a unique woven piece of art. The artists will help the audience to appreciate and participate in how our physical movements, through dance or simply moving through the world, can and do result in a tapestry of motion no less real than a woven piece of art, and how critical it is for all of us to see each other as part of a larger tapestry of community rather than separate pieces.

When dates for the weaving workshops are solidified they will be posted on the site in events,

Ali and her collaborators are working on “MoMents of Nice”.

“Dance making for me is about organizing movement and emotion. I channel emotions and tell stories, internalizing people’s idiosyncrasies and translating them into gestures, which become the seeds of movement phrases. My work exists at the intersection of dance and theater, with specific and purposeful choreography. I am interested in the simplicity of movement and how it can be performed without being extravagant—how intention and presence can drive a work.

MoMents of Nice was conceived in early 2017 as I sought to demystify my mother’s decline and death from cancer. Cancer is unforgiving and relentless—grief is personal and ongoing. The creation of this piece, its genesis undeniable and approach unflinching, uses the tidal wave of emotion as a basis for generating movement. This process fosters heartfelt performances that foster authentic audience connection.”

I am conscious of the challenging and often uncomfortable nature of this topic. Grief is personal. With this project, I seek to contribute an approach to art-making that allows space for emotion from both performers and audience, an unforgiving acceptance of all of the feelings that arise around loss and grief, and a process for finding understanding and relief.” - Ali Kenner Brodsky

Ali will be joined in residence by two collaborators, Jenna Pollack and Morgan Eve Swain, a musician who will be composing and performing with the company during their showing at Lavender Hill Farm on August 1st.

Ali and her collaborators will be sharing a free workshop that is open to the public at The Crooked Tree School of Ballet studio.
